A Bride's Guide to Wedding Dress Lace
Lace varies in pattern, construction, fibre composition, stretch and finish. Compare these details alongside the lining and the way the gown is made. Close-up photographs help, but they cannot tell you everything about the fabric.
The Four Laces You Will Actually Meet
| Corded French | A raised cord outlines parts of the pattern. Check the weight and flexibility of the particular lace, as well as the support built into the gown. |

| Chantilly | Fine, flat, netted ground with delicate floral motifs and a scalloped edge. Light and transparent, beautiful for sleeves, veils and illusion backs. |
| Stretch lace | Lace with give in one or more directions. Check its composition, stretch and recovery rather than assuming that stretch alone indicates quality. |
| Guipure / Venise | Motifs connected without a continuous net background. Weight and drape vary; compare the actual fabric in the finished design. |
What Photographs Can Show
Look for shadow
Close-up photographs can show raised motifs and texture. They cannot reliably tell you whether a fabric stretches or establish its composition.
Follow the repeat
Look at how the motifs meet around seams, the bust and the neckline. Consider pattern placement alongside fit and construction.
Check the edge
Check the edge finish at the hem, neckline and cuffs. A scalloped edge alone does not prove that the garment was finished by hand.

Which Lace for Which Part of the Dress
Sleeves. Check room for movement, the lining and how the cuff sits. Sleeve weight and fit depend on the actual fabric and construction.
Bodice. Ask about lining, cups, closures and other support. Lace alone does not determine whether a bodice stays in place.
Skirt and train. Compare the finished skirt, including all layers, its hem and any train. Browse lace and chiffon wedding dresses.
Back and illusion panels. Fine net with placed motifs, so skin reads through between the flowers. Browse open back wedding dresses.
Ivory, Off-White or Nude Underneath
Lace colour is only half the decision, the lining underneath changes it completely. The same ivory lace over a nude lining reads warm and skin-toned; over an ivory lining it reads crisp and bridal; over champagne it warms further and photographs softer in daylight.
If you want a different lining shade or more coverage, ask whether that change is possible for the gown before ordering.
Caring for a Lace Gown
Follow the care instructions supplied for the finished gown, including its lining and trims. Ask before using steam, heat or cleaning products, and check how the dress should be supported during storage.
