A slit does two things at once. It changes how the dress moves — a long skirt that would otherwise fall as one column now opens with every step, which is exactly why these gowns photograph better walking than standing. And it introduces a clean modern line into an otherwise romantic silhouette, which is what keeps a lace gown from reading purely traditional.

Placement matters more than height. A front slit is the most dramatic and the most exposed. A side slit shows almost nothing standing still and everything in motion, which most brides find is the balance they actually wanted. Either way, choose a shoe you are happy to have seen — a slit will show it.
