When choosing an open back wedding dress, start with a clear photograph of the back. Check where the opening ends, how wide it is and which areas are covered by fabric or sheer lace.
Then ask how the bodice is supported. Back shape, closure, lining and underwear need to work together; a photograph of the outside cannot answer all of those questions.

Four back details to recognise
V-back
The opening narrows towards a point. Its depth can vary, so check where that point sits relative to the waist. The vintage-inspired long sleeve lace gown is one example to compare.
Open back framed by lace
Lace can border an opening or cover part of it with a sheer panel. Look closely to distinguish bare skin from transparent fabric. Compare the back of Diana in lace and chiffon with its sheer sleeves and lace cuffs.
Keyhole opening
A keyhole is an opening enclosed by fabric or lace, usually with a closure above it. Check the size of the opening and the position of the upper fastening. The amount of coverage depends on the design.
Lace-up closure
A lace-up back uses ties instead of, or alongside, another fastening. Any adjustment range depends on the gown and its construction. Do not assume it will accommodate every measurement change, or that this closure is available on every model.

Ask about support and underwear
A low opening may show the band or straps of your usual bra. Before buying underwear, ask about the neckline and back opening of the gown, its lining and the support included in that model.
- Bodice construction: ask whether there are cups, boning or other support and what can be changed.
- Separate cups or adhesive underwear: confirm that your preferred option works with the fabric and coverage of the dress.
- A low-back bra: compare the position of its band and straps with the actual opening, and try the combination at your fitting.
Cup size alone cannot establish whether a gown will provide the support you want. There is no blanket support specification for every dress. Discuss your preferences with Shany for the exact model and check the fit while moving.

Choosing the depth of the opening
Decide how much of the back you want to show, including while sitting or bending. Check side views as well as rear photographs. Sheer lace can give a different impression of coverage from lined lace.

Hair, veil and jewellery
- Hair: try your preferred hairstyle with the gown. Hair worn up makes the back easier to see; wearing it down is also a valid choice.
- Veil: compare its length and transparency over the back detail. Explore the veils and decide when you want to wear or remove one.
- Jewellery: check necklaces, earrings and fastenings against the neckline and lace so they sit as you want.

How do measurements work for an open back gown?
For Custom Made, follow the measurement guide and discuss the desired back coverage and underwear with Shany. For a standard size, check the size guide for that model. Either option may need local alterations after delivery.
Can I change the back opening?
Possibly, depending on the gown. Send the exact link and describe the opening or closure you want. Ask the studio to confirm feasibility, cost and timing before ordering; a different back is not automatically available for every dress.
How long does an order take?
Gown production takes 5-6 weeks, followed by express delivery, usually 3-7 business days. Leave time to try the gown with your planned underwear and arrange any local alterations before the wedding or departure date.
