Buying your wedding dress online can feel like the riskiest thing in the whole wedding. The most important dress you will ever wear, ordered from a screen, without ever putting it on.
I am a third-generation tailor, and I have dressed hundreds of brides who never once set foot in my studio. So I understand the fear. I also know which parts of it are justified and which are not, and the difference is almost always in who you are buying from.
Here is how to tell the two apart.
The warning signs
Almost every bad online bridal story starts the same way. Catch these early and you avoid most of them.
- No photographs from real brides. Editorial shots are lit, styled and retouched. What you want to see is a woman at her own wedding, taken by her own photographer. Look on Instagram, Etsy and Google.
- Vague measurement guidance. If a studio cannot show you exactly where to put the tape, it is not drafting a pattern from your numbers.
- No way to reach a person. You should be able to write to the designer, or to someone who has actually handled the fabric. Not a chatbot.
- Delivery in days. A handmade gown takes weeks. Anyone offering true made-to-measure in a fortnight is sending you something that already existed.
- A very low price and no named maker. If nobody will tell you who sews it or where, you are most likely looking at a replica.
What a studio worth trusting looks like
This is the list I would give my own daughter.
- Names the person who makes the gowns, and the place they are made
- Gives a production timeline you could actually plan around
- Shows real brides and verified reviews
- Sends a measurement guide you can follow without guessing
- Lets you write to the designer
- Tells you the shipping and duty terms before you pay, not after

What made-to-measure does about the fit problem
Fit is the real fear, and it is the right thing to be afraid of.
Instead of buying a standard size and hoping, you send five numbers — bust, waist, hip, height, hollow-to-hem — and I draft the gown around them. I read every set myself before cutting, and if one number does not agree with the others I write to you. That happens more often than brides expect, and catching it is the entire point of the step.
It gets you far closer than any sample can. What it does not get you is a dress nobody ever touches again. A hem or a strap may still want a local adjustment, and I would rather say so here than let you find out in the box.
Want a different neckline, longer sleeves, a lower back than the photograph shows? That is part of the process, not an extra. You can even put the bodice of one gown on the skirt of another. Look through the made-to-measure collection and the boho gowns.

- We sew it. Five to six weeks in the atelier. Veils are quicker, one to two.

How long does it take?
Five to six weeks to make, then three to seven business days to ship. I will check that against your date before you order.
