Chiffon vs Tulle Wedding Dress: Which Boho Skirt Is Right for You?

Thea gown, a lace and tulle boho wedding dress made to measure by Lace & Love

After the silhouette, the skirt fabric is the decision that changes the most about how a boho gown looks and feels. Chiffon and tulle are the two fabrics we cut almost every skirt from, and they drape differently.

The short answer: chiffon usually creates a fluid line, while layered tulle can add volume. Soft tulle can also fall close to the body. For a warm-weather wedding, compare the lining, fabric weight and number of layers in the finished gown. For an outdoor ceremony, check the hem length and how easily you can lift the skirt. Both fabrics can work at a beach, garden or indoor venue; the construction of the dress matters more than the venue label. Production is the same for both, five to six weeks to sew. Both are paired here with a French or vintage lace bodice, both are lined so nothing is see-through, and both are available in standard sizes or cut to your measurements in our studio in Israel.

Every gown at Lace & Love is handmade to order and shipped by DHL or UPS Express, with duties and taxes prepaid where they are shown at checkout.

Chiffon

A fine, sheer, matte fabric with almost no memory. A chiffon skirt does not hold a shape of its own; it falls in a straight, soft line from the waist and moves the moment you do. Ours is always lined in a soft body-coloured layer, so it is not see-through.

Movement. Chiffon moves readily as you walk and can lift in a breeze. Ask for a video of the gown if you want to judge how the skirt moves.

Weight and heat. Chiffon is a lightweight outer fabric. For a summer ceremony, ask about the lining and total number of layers as well.

Ground. Hem length affects how easily you can walk on grass, sand and stone. Chiffon is delicate, so lift the skirt clear of rough ground.

Best for. Beach and destination weddings, elopements, sheath and soft A-line shapes, and brides who want a quiet, flowing line.

Tulle

A fine net that gets its character from layering. Several layers of soft Italian tulle can create a full skirt. The finished weight depends on the type of tulle, the lining and the number of layers. Fewer layers fall close to the body and read soft and ballerina-like; more layers stand away from the leg and give a fuller bridal shape.

Movement. Softer and slower than chiffon. Tulle floats rather than flows, and it settles back into shape after every step.

Weight and heat. Tulle can be light for the volume it creates. Extra layers and the lining can make the finished skirt feel warmer.

Light. Tulle diffuses light instead of reflecting it, which is what produces that slightly hazy, luminous quality in golden-hour photographs.

Best for. Garden and vineyard weddings, ballrooms, sweetheart and A-line shapes, and brides who want volume without a heavy gown.

How to decide

Three practical questions settle it for most brides.

  • Where will you walk? For sand, grass or a long outdoor route, consider the hem length and whether you can lift or bustle the skirt.
  • How do you want the skirt to move? Chiffon usually drapes close to the body. Tulle can fall softly or hold more volume, depending on its stiffness and layers.
  • How much volume do you want in the photographs? Chiffon gives a slim line. Tulle can be as soft or as full as you like, because we choose the number of layers.

Soft tulle, if you cannot choose

Several of our most-ordered gowns sit between the two: a lace bodice over two or three layers of very soft tulle that fall close to the body. You get the floating quality and the luminous photographs without the fullness, and the skirt still moves when you walk. Because everything is cut to order, the number of layers, the length and a slit can all be set through our made-to-measure service.

Questions

Is a chiffon wedding dress see-through?

Not ours. Every chiffon skirt is cut over a soft body-coloured lining, so it stays opaque in daylight and in flash photographs while the chiffon itself keeps its lightness.

Does tulle wrinkle when it travels?

Both fabrics can crease during travel. Unpack and hang the gown on arrival, then follow its care instructions. Ask the studio before applying heat or steam, especially around lace and embellishments.

Which is better for a beach wedding?

Either can work. Chiffon gives a flowing line, while soft tulle offers light volume. For walking on sand, compare the hem length, lining and number of layers, and plan how to keep the skirt off the ground.

Can I choose the number of tulle layers, or add a slit?

Yes to both. Tell us before you order how soft or full you want the skirt and whether you want a slit, and it is built in from the first stitch. Our measurement guide covers the five numbers we need, and Shany reviews them before anything is cut.

How long does it take?

Five to six weeks to sew, then three to seven business days by express courier. Duties and taxes are prepaid where they are shown at checkout, so the total on screen is the total you pay.
