Courthouse Wedding Dress: What to Wear to a City Hall or Civil Wedding

Camille Gown, a light French lace and chiffon wedding dress suited to a courthouse or civil wedding, Lace & Love by Shany Sasson

A courthouse wedding is short. The ceremony itself often takes ten or fifteen minutes, in a small room with a handful of people, and then everyone walks out onto the steps for photos. That is exactly why the dress matters: there is no long reception to grow into it, so it has to feel right from the moment you walk in.

This guide covers what to wear to a courthouse, city hall or civil wedding, how formal to go, which lengths and fabrics work, and how to have a dress made to your measurements in time for your date.

Is there a dress code for a courthouse wedding?

Usually not. Couples wear everything from a simple dress to a full bridal gown. It is still worth checking your clerk's office website, because some buildings have rules about security screening or the number of guests.

So the choice comes down to how bridal you want to feel. Some brides want something low key they could wear to dinner afterwards. Others want an unmistakable wedding dress, just lighter and easier than a ballroom gown. Both are right.

How formal should a courthouse wedding dress be?

Think about the whole day, not just the ceremony. If you are going straight to a restaurant or a small party, choose a dress that works there too. That usually means:

  • Light fabrics like lace and chiffon, which you can sit, walk and climb stairs in.
  • No long train, or a short one you can hold. City hall floors and steps are not made for cathedral lengths.
  • Details that look good up close, like a lace bodice, an open back or delicate sleeves. Courthouse photos are often taken at close range, so texture shows.

Floor length, midi or short?

All three work. Floor length reads as a wedding dress instantly, even in a small room, and it is the safest choice if you want the photos to feel bridal.

A midi or tea length is easier to walk in and looks relaxed, especially with shoes you want to show off.

Short dresses suit very casual ceremonies. If you are reading a guide about wedding dresses, though, you probably want something more special than a cocktail dress.

Every gown we make is cut to your height and the shoes you plan to wear, so the hem sits where you want it instead of dragging on the courthouse steps.

What is the difference between a courthouse dress and a civil wedding dress?

Mostly the name. In the US, people say courthouse or city hall wedding. In the UK, a civil ceremony often takes place at a registry office, and in Germany at the Standesamt. The dress needs are the same everywhere: something special but not heavy, comfortable for a short ceremony and a long celebration afterwards.

If you are having a civil ceremony first and a bigger celebration later, you might want a different dress for each. A lighter lace gown for the civil ceremony can also become your reception dress, or the dress you wear for photos on your honeymoon.

Courthouse wedding dress ideas that work

Soft lace with a chiffon skirt. This is the most versatile choice. The lace bodice gives you the bridal detail, and the chiffon skirt keeps the dress light. The Camille Gown and the Eloise Gown are good examples.

A simple, romantic silhouette. A V neckline and a soft waistline flatter most figures and look effortless in photos. See the Arielle Gown and the Clementine Gown.

An open back or a slit. Courthouse photos are often taken as you walk away or down the steps, so a beautiful back is worth more than you might expect. The Talia Gown has an open back and a high slit.

Sleeves for cooler months. Long or sheer lace sleeves add warmth and look elegant against stone and brick. Browse our long sleeve gowns.

Accessories for a city hall wedding

  • A short veil, or none. A fingertip or elbow-length veil looks lovely in photos and is easy to manage indoors.
  • A shawl, cape or cropped jacket, in case the building is air conditioned or the weather turns.
  • Shoes you can stand in for hours, since you may wait in a hallway before your slot. Tell us the heel height so the hem is right.
  • A small bouquet. It gives your hands something to do in photos and adds color against plain walls.

How long does it take to order?

Most of our gowns take 5-6 weeks to make, followed by DHL or UPS Express delivery in 3-7 business days. If your ceremony date is close, contact Shany before you order. Sometimes a faster timeline is possible, and she will tell you honestly if it is not.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear a full wedding dress to the courthouse?

Yes. There is usually no rule against it. Just avoid a long train and a very full skirt, because ceremony rooms and hallways can be small.

What color should a courthouse wedding dress be?

Ivory and soft white are the classic choices. Ivory lace over a nude lining gives a warmer look that photographs well in daylight.

Is a civil wedding dress less formal?

It can be, but it does not have to be. A lighter version of a bridal gown works well: lace and chiffon instead of heavy satin, and a simpler skirt.

Can my courthouse dress be made to my measurements?

Yes. Most of our gowns are available made to measure. Choose the Custom Made option where it appears and we will send you the measurement guide before production begins.

Can I return a courthouse wedding dress?

Eligible standard-size gowns can be returned within 7 days. Made-to-measure and personalized gowns are final sale once production begins. Please read our return policy before ordering.
